Subtropical Rainforest

We took at trip to the east coast, and visited several interesting habitats.  Here are a few photos from the rainforest in the Lamington National Park in Queensland.  We saw some amazing animals and plants.

Gabe and Gavin at the Binna Burra camp in the rainforest.

We saw our first wallaroo, called a pademelon during our first night. We also saw a mom with a baby in her pouch. The babies are called Joeys.

One of the most common birds was the bush turkey, and although we didn't have turkey for thanksgiving, Australians don't celebrate Thanksgiving, we did see lots of bush turkeys.

There were lots of parrots.

And we saw a kukaburra!

We also saw a few amazing reptiles. Outside the bathroom was this 6 ft. carpet python!

We saw a giant monitor while hiking. This lizard was probably 8 ft. from head to tail.

We also saw a "land mullet" the largest skink in the world.

A highlight of the trip was seeing the giant fruit bats. They sleep in the trees near the road and we were there in the afternoon to see them wake up and fly away in search of food during the night.

Gabe was so impressed he needed to sit down.

The plants were also very interesting. There were lots of ferns and epiphytes, plants that grow on other trees, in the rainforest. We found some vines and swung through the forest like monkeys.

When we were leaving Grandpa spotted a koala.
